Countries in the Southeast Asia with characteristics of tropical climate have very high agricultural potential as a world food source, while on the other hand the characteristics of tropical agro-climate allow the development of pests, diseases, and weeds, that can cause greater crop damage or loss compared to temperate or sub-tropical countries. Efforts to manage crop pests, diseases, and weeds continue to develop in accordance with the development of science and technology.
Climate change has significant effect on the presence of pests. This requires close cooperation among ASEAN countries in facing the impacts of climate change and the threat of pests to the agriculture sector. Thus, it is necessary to held a conference to gather and exchanging information on the results of research conducted in ASEAN member countries.
Oceanic islands are vulnerable ecosystems and their flora has been under pressure since the arrival of the first humans. Human activities and both deliberately and inadvertently introduced biota have had and continue to have a severe impact on island endemic plants. The number of alien plants has increased nearly linearly on many islands, perhaps resulting in extinction-based saturation of island floras.
Pheromones are substances that serve as highly selective attractants for insects allowing the control of deleterious pests while preserving beneficial insects. These compounds elicit non-lethal, species-specific insect control through disrupting mating cycles, resulting in lower insect pest populations and significantly reducing crop damage and losses. Provivi is developing natural, affordable pheromone products for pest control and crop protection.
Remote sensing is the science of obtaining information about objects or areas from a distance. Remote sensing has a wide range of applications in many different fields: Coastal, Ocean, Hazard assessment, Natural resource management, and crop protection in the future.
